This range of two-part audio dramas stars Tom Baker reprising his most popular role as the Fourth Doctor (from 1974 - 1981)with a number of his original TV companions. I have been enjoying more and more of the Big Finish productions over the last year, most especially those adventures featuring my favorite classic Doctors (Tom Baker and Peter Davison). Re-teaming with their best beloved companions, like Leela, K-9, Tegan, Nyssa, Turlough and here - Lalla Ward's smashing "Romana". This episode had great build-up and tension, and I could definitely see it being an episode from the early 80's. Tom and Lalla continue to prove how awesome their chemistry still is. In these audio productions, Tom gets to add-lib a bit more and sounds like he's having tremendous fun! As he says in the interview following the story, he always thinks of his fans, and no doubt he is playing to his audience in these audio plays. He never lets us down. Lalla gets to tear into guest stars and stand up for all that is good in the galaxy, and that is - after all - Romana at her best! Of special interest, Sheila Ruskin plays the "villain" here and classic fans will remember her as Kassia, in the 1981 episode, "The Keeper of Traken". With a submarine suddenly turning up in an unexpected place, monsters on the prowl, deadly foes threatening our heroes, and a sense all the actors are having fun throughout, this is a sure hit in anyone's collection.Product details

The Doctor and Romana land on a World War II submarine in the middle of space where some members of the crew read the Doctor's thoughts while a chimpanzee begins to learn to talk. Of all the current series of Fourth Doctor Adventures, this story sounds the most like it belongs in Season 18 with his high concept sci fi idea that's at the core of the story. It's hindered a bit by the villain who is met to be complex, but comes across as a bit indecisive. Still, a solid story overall.
