As a boy, Marcus Tillman dreamed of being a sideshow barker, but never in his wildest dreams could he have imagined the kind of freak show he would work in one day. When the dead begin to rise from their graves and tear apart the very fabric of civilization, a special government-sponsored strike team known as the Crypto-Squad is created, and Tillman is put in charge. Comprised of beasts that are the stuff of rumor and legend, the Crypto-Squad’s mission is to eradicate a group of doomsday cultists who refer to themselves as The Unending. Refusing to accept defeat and determined to save those who are left alive, Tillman mobilizes this ragtag band of misfits, realizing that they are the world’s last remaining hope. Led by the Mothman, the Crypto-Squad is comprised of El Chupacabra, The Jersey Devil, Sasquatch from various tribes, Mongolian Death Worms, and more. As the legions of undead march across country, devouring what remains of America, the lives of millions rest in the hands of this dangerous group of rogue beasts. Eric S. Brown and Jason Brannon’s Crypto-Squad is a mix of monsters, covert operatives, cultists, and the undead. This is the zombie apocalypse as you’ve never experienced it before!
CryptoSquad Volume 1 Jason Brannon Eric S Brown 9781479378456 Books
Crypto-Squad falls in with the like of many other monster hunter fantasy stories, but this is a short one. Not quite up to the gun porn of a Corriea or a Ringo, but many of the same elements are there. I wish the publishers would give Brown a bigger canvas to work on to develop the characters more. I have read many Brown stories, and look forward to reading some of his full length stories that he has coming out. He work really well on these novelettes, and I would have no problem recommending them all.Product details

CryptoSquad Volume 1 Jason Brannon Eric S Brown 9781479378456 Books Reviews
Bringing together various legends and making them into a team of super heroes is no easy task... But the Crypto-Squad succeeds because of the talents of Brown and Brannon. Both writers have a fast paced balls-to-the-wall style that will leave you exhausted. This isn't entertainment, this is nourishment for your brain! You'll be hooked form the first page, so you might was well download it now ) I've read a lot of books by both authors and this is a partnership that I hope continues for many more!
I went into the book expecting it to be good, but wow!!! Blown away from the pacing, the style, the violence, the character development... A very clear and concise story that will leave you wanting ALOT MORE!!
Eric S. Brown has a history of writing with the mindset of a 12 year old boy. This is not a bad thing, he simply applies his adult writing experience to producing the kind of books (more novella's than novels they are short on word count) that a kid obsessed with comics would come up with.
The action and characters are entirely comic-book-esque. People die - usually fast and horribly. The why of anything in the paper thin plot and silly literary obsessions like character development are completely ignored in favour of balls to the wall action. This makes reading Brown's work lots of fun - provided you don't think about it more seriously than you would a Saturday morning cartoon. It's crazy, inventive, action packed, comic-book fun. Read and enjoy.
This book was a fantastic read from the first to the last page. The action starts with the first word and continues through until the last, with the promise of much more to come.
Unlike many zombie stories, which do not really focus on where the undead came from, or what caused them to rise, Crypto-Squad is all about the cause. A cult have plans to raise the dead in order to resurrect an ancient serpent God.
The undead come thick and fast in this tale, which make it not only an action packed read, but one you could happily go through again and again. The description were fluid and filled with the right amount of horror gore to keep it visceral without reducing it to something lighthearted. The story is well paced and moves forward in time with all the necessary revelations.
If forests and cities will with the undead aren't enough for you, if tens of thousands of them, aren't enough for you, what about if we add, a chupacabra, numerous Bigfoot, Firebirds, Mongolian Death Worms, ancient flesh eating locusts, merefolk, and Mothman among many many other wonderfully dsecribed Crytipds taken from pretty much every main stream legend in America... including a guest appearance by a very Devilish creature in the latter stages.
I am so glad that I have part II to this great series already loaded (and half read) on my . I sincerely hope more will come. If you want to show people that reading is fun, then this is the book to use.
Okay, so just the other day I was looking at this package of Werther's Caramel Coated Popcorn in the drugstore - and I said to my wife - "Now that looks like about three hours overtime on the elliptical trainer worth of calories. Do you think I ought to buy myself a bag and try it?"
"I don't know," she told me. "That also looks like it might be highly addictive. There is probably a good reason why they are selling that stuff in the drugstore."
Well - let me tell you - Eric S. Brown's fiction has an AWFUL lot in common with that caramel-coated popcorn.
Number one - Eric S. Brown's fiction is HIGHLY addictive.
I mean it is sticky - as in it will stick to your fingers and to your eyeballs and to your beard if you happen to be wearing one. It will stick inside your mind and it will grow and fester there and before too long you will be dreaming about Bigfoot and Mongolian Death Worms and Skunk Apes and other such wholesome figments of Eric's wonderfully twisted popcorn-brain.
I have had this book on my for so long that I cannot remember exactly when I picked it up. I was putting off reading it because I was working on my own couple of Bigfoot novels and I didn't want to run the risk of inadvertently copying Eric's fictional style.
Well - let me tell you - Eric S. Brown's fiction is definitely inimitable.
I don't care if you have yourself a truckload of tracing paper, photocopy machines and computer scanners - you are NOT going to be able to imitate Eric's fiction.
This isn't great art or deep, thoughtful literature.
In case you forgot where I started this review - Eric S. Brown writes caramel-coated popcorn.
Think about the freak show at the Carnival.
Think about the funhouse mirrors and the tattooed man and the house of horror.
This particular book that I just read - CRYPTO-SQUAD - is a real kitchen sink of a book - by which I mean Eric tips out his imagination and empties onto the computer screen with every kind of cryptid critter you could imagine going toe-to-hairy-toe with a swarm of scuzzball man-eating zombies.
Yeah, that's right. It is that kind of book. It is meaty and chewy and wet in all the right places. Eric does not fart around. He gets right into the action with Bigfoot stomping on zombies and then he just puts the pedal to the metal and does not let up as he weaves himself a great big old tangle-knot of devil-worship, snake-men, the Jersey Devil, and of course more Bigfoot.
If you love those raunchy old creature-features with Godzilla and the Werewolf and Frankenstein and the Gill-Man and Flying Pterodactyls you ought to pick up this book.
If you dig your horror wet and fun and chewy and shot through with gristly bits - you ought to pick up this book.
Heck - if you dig caramel-coated popcorn - you for sure REALLY ought to pick up this book.
yours in storytelling,
Steve Vernon
